Description: The brilliant Christopher Durang, wrote some of his darkest comedies early in his career, none darker and funnier than Baby with the Bathwater. John and Helen are new parents. At first glance, they are a perfect Norman Rockwell couple with a newborn in tow. We soon find out, however, they have no knowledge, ability or clue of how to care for a child. They resist learning the gender of their child, fearing that would be impolite, and sing nightmarish lullabies to the little one. Soon, a nanny arrives, seemingly out of nowhere. This Mary-Poppins-gone-terribly-wrong insinuates herself into the family's life and home and the child receives even worse care, if that's possible. The male child, now called “Daisy” has an understandably unstable life, with a tendency to run in front of moving vehicles, promiscuity to the tune of 1,756, and a 13-year stint as a college sophomore. After three hundred seventy-seven sessions with a therapist, Daisy finds happiness with his own wife and baby. | |
